What are clubs looking for when signing a professional gk after a trial?

Football selectors are the bridge between aspirant soccer players and clubs. They are assigned to search for great talent for the player from youngsters who can serve their club better for a long tenure. Thus these scouts, when going out to sign a Goal Keeper for their club, mostly judged them on his height, while in the goal defending the ball, the taller the goalkeeper has more reach on every end of the goal and more chance to prevent the opponent from scoring, but height is not the only thing which the clubs see in a fresh, but height is not even that important while a keeper is in the goal. The important thing a club sees in a goalkeeper to be at the top level is his grit, Determination, and character. The ability to stop the ball whether one is 6’5 or below 6 in height.

Here are the qualities of a professional keeper that a club looks for when signing after trial.

  • CONFIDENCE & LEADERSHIP
  • Decision-making and the ability to read the game
  • Outfield Attributes
  • Attitude and work ethic

CONFIDENCE & LEADERSHIP

This is a real challenge of goalkeeping to master in training sessions. Some Goalies will undoubtedly have strong belief and leadership than most others.   Some Scouts have openly stated (digitally) that they want to see a goalie who verbally and physically dominates their goalmouth. This involves facilitating strong and clear instructions to their defensive players in any and all circumstances (building walls, clearing space, marking spare players, and so on), as well as having the courage to claim the ball in order to diffuse dangerous conditions.  A goalkeeper who can command the respect of his colleagues goes a long way toward establishing a stable defense. As a corollary, Scouts put a lot of emphasis on leadership.

Decision-making and the ability to read the game

A keeper may have all the technical skills and confidence in the world, but if they regularly make poor decisions on the pitch, their ability is lowered.   Recruiters want to know if a highly adept Keeper can also analyze the game and make sensible decisions. They want to test if a Keeper can minimize the risks by making the right choice in regard to whether Crosses/corners should be grabbed or pounded. Choosing the best dealing technique for a variety of saves (including using feet) Choosing the most appropriate distribution strategy for every phase of the game (e.g., reducing pressure or launching an attack on the opposition) Claiming or clearing loose balls just on penalty region’s edge

Outfield Attributes

With the expansion of the Cleaners Catcher role, goalkeepers are increasingly needed to demonstrate “on-field” capabilities to fulfill the last defenders’ role. Goalkeepers must adhere to the following requirements to execute this role:

  • Preserve an exceptionally high fitness level.
  • Exhibit exceptional speed and quickness.
  • Have excellent control and conviction with the ball at your feet (especially when under pressure).
  • Demonstrate your skill to make highly accurate passes and long balls.
  • Predict the ball and execute well-timed tackles on a continuous basis (e.g., slide tackles)

Just think about the fact that each club is distinctive and will place a greater significance on certain “outfield” attributes than most others.

Attitude and work ethic

More than anyone else on the ground, goalie cannot lose their composure whenever things don’t go in their favor on or off the field. Consequently, a Goalie Recruiter prefers a relatively stable team player who can rebound from blunders. The ideal candidate is able to manage critique and aims to learn constantly.  You may have observed that hardly a few veteran goalies are at the epicenter of club scandals and squeeze – because most of them were recruited for their capability to keep a team around each other. While the “wild card” striker has some attraction (albeit there are also possible drawbacks), no one wants an inconsistent or temperamental last defense.

Conclusion

All Goalkeeper Scouts look for bullet-fired abilities, excellent levels of fitness, and physique (particularly a muscular and tall body shape). Nevertheless, in many ways, these qualities are needed. The more technical elements of the game differentiate one Goalkeeper from the other and contribute to piquing the interest of major clubs.  Several specific Goalkeeping attributes that were not always at the top of the Scouting checklist in previous decades have witnessed an increase in demand in the modern football era. Mastering these aspects of goaltending could provide one Keeper with an edge over others.

Being in the right spot at the right time, of course, helps in being Scouted. Conversely, if you perform things perfectly and can exhibit abilities that appeal to the modern game both in actual games and practice, you’ll have a greater chance of being noticed. We hope that you know about the qualities that recruiters usually find before hiring any goalkeeper.
