Players – The Pressure of The Go To MAN

Players – The ‘Go To’ Player

After completing The AFS Showcase Trials it was interesting in what players described themselves as.The fashion at the moment shows that false nines, centre attacking midfielders, NO. 10 are all the rage. There is a new generation of aspiring footballers want to fill these positions.

This maybe because we have grown up in a Social Media world where people want the bright lights and the instant success and have only viewed highlight reels of the messi, ronaldos and Bales of this world.

The Art of defending seems to be dying and the English national team is a perfect example of how there is a massive reduction in good old fashioned defenders.

The majority of players now want to be attacking positions but especially the players that deliver. The Go To Player is not an easy job to fill.

What is the Go To Player?

The Go To Player delivers and is expected to deliver in important and decisive moments in the game. Ronaldo and Messi score and create and they take opinion out of the game as their record stands alone. Match after match, goal after goal. They come up with the goods and their team mates respect them for it and often put up with their unwillingness to defend.

This is a great video on Ferdinand and Scholes basically saying that they knew Ronaldo would deliver so it wasn’t necessary for Ronaldo to come back and defend.

If you want to be that go to player, make sure you deliver as the pressure will soon mount.

Great advice is to make sure you analysis the opposition and identify weaknesses in their defence. Ronaldo is a great example of this, Gary Neville describes him as a predator waiting for a sign of weakness. Once he sees this weakness he attacks quick and strong.
