Football Trials UK

Football Trials UK

During The Asia Football Showcase event it became clear that many of the players on Football Trials UK didn’t know what was expected of them in their position. A coach once said to me ‘you have to be intelligent enough to keep it simple’. I think this is ultimately the case when players have trials. Players need to know what is expected in their position and hopefully take as much opinion out of coaches or scouts mind.

Full Backs

Firstly i apologise for not including goalkeepers in this list. https://www.premierfootballuk.com/ Lets look at with the ball. How many variations of passes does a full back take? I have had a think and here is a list:

  • wide midfielder – inside and outside
  • first striker
  • second striker – diagonal, channel
  • channel ball for midfielder
  • Cruyff turn to GK
  • Cruyff turn to Centre back
  • Cross field to full back or wide midfielder

There are nine different passes here. All of these passes are ‘practicable’. Think how much you would improve if you did one hundred passes times 9 every day? Preparing for football trials is difficult but like i said try and keep it simple.

Defensive Midfielders

Often the role as a defensive midfielder is to bring order to chaos. Tidy the game up and try to pick the right ball with a clear understanding of what the state of the game is. The same coach who i quoted early also said ‘there is a right ball. a wrong ball and an acceptable ball’ a defensive midfielders job is to make sure they pick that right ball but if not possible do the acceptable ball. This is why Michael Carrick is get the plaudits at the moment. He picks the right ball more often that not.

So have a think of your position and what moves and passes are relative. Prepare for Football Trials UK.
