A-League expanding to 12 teams for 2020-21

The Australian A-League formed in 2005 and has seen plenty of ups and downs over the last 15 years of football. The league has seen teams come and go including the New Zealand Knights, Gold Coast United, and North Queensland Fury.

The league has ridden the wave of teams failing and expanded to an 11th club this season with Western United. The A-League will welcome its 12th team to the competition next term with the arrival of Macarthur FC.

Macarthur FC will change the face of football in Australia with some of its innovative initiatives. The club’s biggest development that will make it different than the other clubs of the Australian league is the $15 million it raised in sponsorships. It isn’t just the money the club has raised from sponsors that has made it different, however.

Macarthur FC have developed a membership program that will be the envy of Australian clubs. The program will allow members to vote for two of the seven board members at the club. The community focus will give a true fan voice to Macarthur FC, which is something other clubs in the A-League do not have.

The club has already claimed it will put the community first and that could mean opportunities for players from around the South Western Sydney region. The Charles Perkins Soccer Academy was launched by Macarthur FC to promote the competing of players from indigenous descent. Not only will the program look to promote football skills but it will work within the community to grow other areas.

The A-League is still in the early stages of the 2019-20 season and new boys Western United are doing well in their debut season. Macarthur FC are hoping to make a splash as well in their debut campaign with an attacking brand of football.

Macarthur FC will kickoff next season and offer more opportunities to football players seeking to play at the top-level Down Under.
